Thijs Nel

Medium: Mixed on Canvas and Ceramics

Thijs breathes to paint & meditate. He spent a difficult childhood in the Lowveld on a farm then called Waterkloof, now called Ellisras. As a young man Thijs explored Europe. He later visited India, the ancient beauty of the sub-continent calling him back again and again.

In the early 1970s Thijs was resident at the famous Cité Internationale-des-Arts in Paris for two years. He completed murals at Bois d’Arcy and Neuilly-sur-Marne and studied lithography in the hallowed studios of Henri Deprest and Jean-Paul Pons. For the next two years he shared a studio with opera director and designer Jean-Yves Taverniér, gaining valuable experience in working with light effects.

His international travels have left deep prints on Thijs’ soul. He creates timeless pieces, which seem to breathe tranquility. The serenity that surrounds Thijs exists through his work. His connection with the metaphysical is spiritual.

For over forty years he has exhibited throughout South Africa and in France, Botswana, and Zimbabwe. Thijs’ art is represented in private and public collections in France, Great Britain, USA, Holland, Israel, Japan, Ethiopia, South Africa and China. Among his commissions are murals hanging in the dining room of the Amadeus Mozart School in Bois d’Arcy near Versailles, France. In addition Thijs has written various short stories, plays and anthologies.
