Judy Bumstead

I was born in Benoni in 1952 and grew up between the mine dumps in the smog of coal smoke and apartheid.   My last two years of high school were spent at Art School and I went on to do a 4 year course in Fine Art and Design at Johannesburg School of Art.

For the last two decades I have lived, with my family in Calitzdorp.  I paint in oils almost exclusively.  Two subjects have become increasingly important to me.   They are paintings of the veld which I call collectively “The Embroidered Veld Series”, and paintings of packaging which I call collectively “The Vance Packard Series”.   Both groups of work are deeply rooted in concern for the environment.
