Nature,Red in Tooth and Claw “…Love Creation’s final law, Tho' Nature, red in tooth and claw With ravine, shriek'd against his creed”

Red like blood .Nature spills it- crimson, maroon , death follows and then new life births with it-amber,ruby red. Claws and teeth she has, armaments of survival. She burgeons unselfconsciously, without selfies or second guessing herself .She is neither sweet or sentimental, though at times exquisitely beautiful,unpretentious, powerful , independent, centred and sometimes inexorably cruel. She is never still , however barren she appears. Grains of sand shift and minute many legged creatures move. Cycles turn. Dust to dust. Chaos resets to sacred geometry. I marvel and wonder and reset.

I could pontificate endlessly on how my enviroment informs my work, how the naked aesthetic of the Karoo inspires my work-but simply put …I am helpless against the impulse to paint what the Karoo reveals. walking in the veldt is a vitaliser for me,thoughts drop away, colours jump out and I am grounded, quietened, uplifted. I paint many subjects , but I keep reverting to Karoo growth, soil and atmosphere.

I have used parts of Alfred Lord Tennyson’s ”In Memoriam A.H.H to illustrate this collection, as his eloquent words about nature resonate with me.

“Be near me when my light is low,

When the blood creeps, and the nerves prick

And tingle; and the heart is sick,

And all the wheels of Being slow.

Be near me when the sensuous frame

Is rack'd with pangs that conquer trust;

And Time, a maniac scattering dust,

And Life, a Fury slinging flame.
